Why 9 PM, and why 18+

A town with ghosts, not a ghost town

Flagstaff was once a sleepy railroad settlement at the base of Mount Humphries. It survived, it thrived, and it kept the receipts: murder trials, hotel rooms with histories the front desk won't volunteer, and a basement that eventually drew a television crew to town.

Mountain Town of Madness is our adults-only ghost tour, built for people who want a different kind of night out. Same downtown route as our original tour, same research from co-founder and local author Susan Johnson, same award-winning guides, but with the freedom to lean into the darker details, the gallows humor, and an extra true crime case we save for this tour.

You'll meet John Weatherford, the eccentric visionary behind the Orpheum Theatre and the Weatherford Hotel. You'll hear why the Hotel Monte Vista and the 1926 train depot are known as supernatural hotspots, and what happened on Leroux Street that outlived the town's beloved physician.

Then there's the story we save for this tour: a 1980s murder trial that took a turn nobody in that courtroom expected. We'll let your guide handle that one.

The research is the difference

We wrote the books on these stories

Every story on this tour is originally researched by co-founder and published local author Susan Johnson: Haunted Flagstaff, Wicked Flagstaff, and The Walkup Family Murders, all from The History Press.

Our guides don't recite a script. They internalize the research, add their own encounters from years of nights on these streets, and adjust to the crowd in front of them. It's why no two tours are identical, and why guests come back.

Steven the Heathen was a very knowledgeable tour guide with so many stories. We had a great time walking through downtown during the Mountain Town of Madness, adult only tour. We got the creepy history as well as stories of people's ghostly encounters.
