Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an adults-only ghost tour in Flagstaff?

Yes. Mountain Town of Madness is the original adults-only ghost tour in Flagstaff, run by Freaky Foot Tours, the family-owned company behind the city's original ghost tour. It departs Friday and Saturday nights at 9 PM from Wheeler Park in downtown Flagstaff, runs 90 minutes, and every guest must be 18 or older.

How is Mountain Town of Madness different from the regular Flagstaff ghost tour?

Same streets, darker stories. The Downtown Flagstaff Haunted History Tour is our all-ages original. Mountain Town of Madness covers the same historic downtown with the material we leave out of the family version: heavier true crime, the darker details behind the hauntings, gallows humor, and an extra case we save just for this tour. Guides do not have to keep it PG-13.

Do I really have to be 18?

Yes. This is an adults-only experience, and every guest on the reservation must be 18 or older. The stories deal with murder, suicide, and other subjects we handle honestly rather than softly.

What if my group includes kids or teens?

Book the Downtown Flagstaff Haunted History Tour instead. It is our original all-ages ghost tour, runs nightly at 7 PM, and covers the same downtown with storytelling the whole group can enjoy. Details at flagstaffghosttour.com.

When does the tour run?

Friday and Saturday nights at 9:00 PM, year-round. Flagstaff is quieter and darker by then, which suits this material. The booking calendar shows current availability.

How much does it cost?

Adults are $39 and students are $35 when you book direct on this site. The tour caps at 28 guests so everyone can hear the guide.

How long is the tour and how far do we walk?

About 90 minutes and about one mile on downtown sidewalks at an easy pace, with plenty of stops for stories.

Where do we meet?

Wheeler Park Parking Lot, 212 W Aspen Ave, between Flagstaff City Hall and Wheeler Park. Look for your Southwestern Gothic-dressed guide by the parking meter. There is metered and free parking nearby. Please arrive 15 minutes early for check-in.

Do you go inside the buildings?

No. Because of the number of stops and the length of the stories, we do not enter any historic haunts. The stories hit harder from the street, standing outside the buildings where these things happened, in the dark.

Is the tour actually scary?

There are no actors, props, or jump scares. What you get is real history told straight: documented crimes, firsthand accounts from guides and guests, and the darker side of buildings you can walk past any afternoon. Most guests find that lands harder than any haunted house.

What is the extra true crime case you save for this tour?

A 1980s murder trial that took a turn nobody in that courtroom expected. We save it for this tour because it deserves the full telling. The rest of that story you will hear on the tour.

Who researches the stories?

Every story is originally researched by co-founder and published local author Susan Johnson, author of Haunted Flagstaff, Wicked Flagstaff, and The Walkup Family Murders. Guides internalize the research and add their own experiences, which is why no two nights are identical.

What brought The Dead Files to Flagstaff?

Travel Channel's The Dead Files investigated downtown Flagstaff in a two-hour episode that aired in April 2022, featuring locations along our route and stories from our research. On the tour you will stand where the cameras rolled and hear what the episode could not fit.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable walking shoes and layers. Flagstaff sits at 7,000 feet, the weather shifts fast, and nights run cold even in summer. Bring a water bottle, and charge your phone if you want photos at the haunted landmarks.

Can we drink on the tour?

No, this is a walking tour, not a bar crawl. If you want ghost stories between rounds at downtown's most haunted bars, book Spirits With The Spirits, our 21+ haunted pub crawl.

Is the route accessible?

The route stays on downtown city sidewalks at an easy pace, about one mile total. If you have accessibility questions for your group, call (928) 224-0518 and we will talk through the route with you.

What is the cancellation policy?

Full refund if you cancel 72 or more hours before the tour. Cancellations between 24 and 72 hours before the tour receive a 50 percent refund. No refund under 24 hours.

Can I book the whole tour privately for a group?

Yes, private bookings are available for groups, parties, and events. Call (928) 224-0518 or email support@freakyfoottours.com and we will set it up.

Do I need to sign anything before the tour?

Yes, every guest on the reservation signs a waiver ahead of time. You will get the link with your booking confirmation. Arriving 15 minutes early makes check-in easy.
